Mary by Janis Cooke Newman5/9/2023 ![]() Despite his gawky, angular, unlovely looks, she adored him-even when she had an affair with another to defuse some of her heat. She was in an almost constant state of trying to seduce him, usually without success. ![]() ![]() Lincoln, as portrayed by Janis Cooke Newman, was sexually repressed and feared Mary's passion. His opening line was "Miss Todd, I want to dance with you the worst way." Their relationship was odd, to say the least. She makes a good case for herself, despite occasional manic behavior and often uncontrollable grief. ![]() According to these notes, although she held séances in the White House and drove her family deeply into debt because of compulsive shopping, she was perfectly sane. ![]() She takes up her pen to block out the screams and moans of the other inmates and to save her own sanity. A separate peace online book5/9/2023 ![]() ![]() Therefore, the injury was not fully Gene’s fault. On the other hand, the boys were not supposed to be on the tree anyway, and this adventure was Phineas’ idea. It took me a moment to realize that Gene may not have understood what he was doing, and most likely was not aware that Phineas would end up shattering his leg. This part of the book caused me to feel both surprised at Gene and confused about why Gene would do such a thing to his best friend. This resulted in Phineas tumbling into the water at uncontrollable speeds and never being able to play sports again. One day, Gene lashed out and shook a branch of a tree that Phineas was standing on. Gene, being best friends with one of the most popular and well-liked students Phineas, found it hard to contain his jealousy. ![]() ![]() I was very surprised by the main character Gene and his outlook on life. ‘A Separate Peace,’ has many twists and turns that result in interesting reactions from readers of vast age differences. The main character Gene goes through a period where his jealousy of his best friend drives Gene to do things he never thought he would be doing. Although this book would not be a book of my choice I did enjoy reading it for the interestingly developed plot, and intriguing characters that deal with real-life problems. ![]() This summer all incoming freshmen were asked to read the book “A Separate Peace,” by John Knowles. ![]()

It works so well because while each book can be read alone, it also reflects a genuinely funny and fascinating picture of how the characters feel about the events, the twists of the plot, and how, most significantly, they feel about each other – and a daunting Dowager Duchess of Wyndham. This series of two novels compliment each other that they represent different views and perspectives of the same events, reflecting the personalities of the four main characters. ![]() While most people with a passing interest in historical romance will have heard of Bridgerton series of books on which the famous television series is based, Julia Quinn has also produced other series of books set in the early 1800s, sometimes called Regency romances.
