On the flip side, I've seen 20-somethings who've had every advantage, but who blow it and fall very far from where they grew up.ĭr. ![]() I've worked with clients with the saddest family histories, who grew up chanting, "You can't pick your family, but you can pick your friends." And then in their 20s, they transform their lives by picking and creating good families for themselves. If there's ever a 10-year period when you're going to transcend your childhood, it's going to be the 20-something years. On why a person's childhood doesn't necessarily shape his or her 20s The things that we do and the things that we don't do are going to have an enormous effect across years and even generations. Our brain caps off its last growth spurts. ![]() Our personalities change more in our 20s than any other time. We know that more than half of Americans are married or living with or dating their future partner by 30. We know that 70 percent of lifetime wage growth happens in the first 10 years of a career. We know that 80 percent of life's most defining moments happen by age 35. On why our 20s are the most defining decade ![]()

William golding5/12/2023 ![]() ![]() Food was not plentiful, and even scarcity could not make it interesting. Postwar austerity and rationing had restricted life to a degree hard to convey now. ![]() It was barely nine years since the end of the second world war. Some of the book’s preoccupations are understandable. Faber published it 60 years ago, on 16 September 1955, and it remained my father’s favourite among his novels for the rest of his life. It was also fast: the first draft took him little more than a month, astonishing when you consider that he had a fulltime teaching job as well. But at the same time his writing was vivid, original and – you would have said – fearless. My father was always full of self-doubt and very dependent on these two trusted critics. Between him and my mother (always my father’s first reader), confidence was sustained, and the new book completed in draft. Charles Monteith, his editor at Faber & Faber, was aware of the problem. ![]()

Among others walton5/11/2023 ![]() Morwenna and her sister, Morganna, are involved in a magical ritual gone wrong, and Morwenna survives while her sister does not. ![]() The defining moment of the book actually takes place before the story begins. Among Others is a diary of loss, gain, and self-exploration-that is, pretty much what all teenagers go through, albeit usually without fairies. As Morwenna unspools the story of her recovery after the accident that claimed her twin sister’s life, we learn about her and her struggle to reconcile the real and the fantastic. Jo Walton’s familiarity with England, Wales, and presumably girls’ boarding schools all comes through clearly in these diary pages. It even tickled me to see the place where I would be staying (Bury St Edmunds) mentioned in passing. I read this book on a plane over the Atlantic as I travelled to England for job interviews. ![]()
