The sellout review5/13/2023 She understood the colored person’s desire for the domineering white presence, which the Wheaton Academy represented. It’s causing good things to happen, and he starts to get an idea of why:Ĭharisma had intuitively grasped the psychological subtleties of my plan even as it was just starting to make sense to me. The Sellout, Paul Beatty’s 2015 novel and winner of the Man Booker Prize, is a wildly free-wheeling satire of race relations in the United States that seems designed to offend just about everyone, several times over.Īt its witty, angry, bitter heart, though, it has a message.Ībout two-thirds of the way through the novel, the central character - whose last name is Me and whose first name is never given - ruminates on the surprising byproducts of his seemingly nihilistic campaign to resegregate his small city of Dickens and its black population.

John bergers way of seeing5/13/2023 The modern interrogation of centuries-old oil paintings was a milestone in cultural theory. His book Ways of Seeing, of the same title as the TV docu-series is a ubiquitous reading list choice for many third level students of arts and humanities. The 90-year-old artist, critic and writer, who passed away on January 2nd in Paris, leaves behind a rich and noble legacy of compassion learning - and a disdain for exclusive cultural gatekeeping. He argued that the way a work of art was perceived differed depending on the person who was perceiving it, and that your own ideology and background guided your absorption of cultural artefacts. John Berger was a man who forged a path to help dismantle the notion of art being something for an elite few. John Berger (5 November 1926 2 January 2017)

Manuele fior 5000 km al secondo5/13/2023 He throw the door open to his apartment, which is full of warm light and dotted with red curtains. Manuele guides us along the Maison’s gardens, a labyrinth of green which culminates in a side entrance. ‘Bonsoir,’ we hear, and it is ‘bonsoir’ that ’s French graphic designer and I respond to Manuele Fior, in customary French ‘good evening’ fashion. From afar, a man is breaking into a run to come and open the grill for us. Soon enough I am standing before the gates of a huge building, which is lying dormant next to the famous station which drives people out towards the east of the country, as its name suggests. The maison de l’architecture ('house of architecture') is at gare de l’est, only ten minutes walk from HQ. It’s 7pm and raining this evening in Paris. Surprised by joy by cs lewis5/12/2023 He writes about his experiences at Malvern College in 1913, aged 15. He finally finds what it's for at the end. He's struck with "stabs of joy" throughout life. This Joy was a longing so intense for something so good & so high up it couldn't be explained with words. However, while he does describe his life, the principal theme of the book is Joy as he defined it. He recounts his early years with a measure of amusement sometimes mixed with pain. That isn't to say the book is devoid of information about his life. This word was the best translation he could make of the German idea of Sehnsucht, longing. His aim was to identify & describe the events surrounding his accidental discovery of & consequent search for the phenomenon he labelled "Joy". This is because his purpose in writing wasn't primarily historical. The book overall contains less detail concerning specific events than typical autobiographies. Surprised by Joy: The Shape of My Early Life is a partial autobiography describing Lewis' conversion to Christianity.

Rumpelstiltskin by Paul O. Zelinsky5/12/2023 Now this is a complete lie, but if you were the King, wouldn’t you want to see this? The King orders the young girl to the castle at once where she is locked in a room full of straw and ordered to spin it into gold by morning or she will be killed. The miller has a chance meeting with the King, and in the hope of getting his attention, he brags that not only is his daughter beautiful, but she can spin straw into gold. It begins with a poor miller, and his beautiful daughter. Most of us are familiar with the characters in this story. The inside cover tells us this is a book full of alchemy! If you Google that term, you find alchemy is defined as “a seemingly magical process of transformation, creation or combination.” I find this to be an apt description of Paul O. This is my review of Rumpelstiltskin, retold and illustrated by Paul O.

The Birth House by Ami McKay5/12/2023 The men did whatever they had to do to get by. Our little village, perched on the crook of God’s finger, has always been ruled by storm and season. Each morning you set your sights on the tasks ahead and hope that when the day is done you’re farther along than when you started. Strength and a sense of knowing, that’s what you have to have to live in the Bay. His callused hands, veined with pride, had a memory for measure and a knowing of what it takes to withstand the sea. Father was an intuitive carpenter, carrying out his work like holy ritual. Oak for stability and certainty, yellow birch for new life and change, spruce for protection from the world outside. He and his five brothers, shipbuilders by trade, raised her worthy from timbers born on my grandfather’s land. A strong house for a Rare woman, he said. My father, Judah Rare, built this farmhouse in 1917. Together, the house and I have held strong against the churning tides of Fundy. My house stands at the edge of the earth. |
