In Patron Saints of Nothing by Randy Ribay, 17-year-old Jay learns that his cousin in the Philippines has been murdered. This was a powerful reminder that certain values that we take for granted are not universal, and that we should always respect the culture and beliefs of others, expressing not imposing our opinions until we have a deep understanding of the facts at hand. As one reads the book and related nonfictional materials, it jumps out that while the War on Drugs has caused much suffering, it is supported by much of the Filipino society and perceived as a necessary evil. The author offers a list of recommended reading that is a good research starting point for anyone interested in learning more about the issue. ![]() Like Jay in the story, I was barely aware of how the War on Drugs carried out by Rodrigo Duterte has ravaged the country. This book also opened my eyes to the plight of the Filipino people. ![]()
